Description

Autumn is the season for long walks through mist and stories. This cape was made for that kind of day, when light moves softly and fabric follows. Whether you have already run through the moors or have only dreamt of it, this piece was created to turn that image into something real.

Inspiration

While the predecessor, the Eden Cape, was deeply rooted in the 18th century robe volante, I wanted this cape to take its design strength from the first half of the 19th century: the golden age of gothic literature. So here you have the off-the-shoulder neckline, the pleated detail, the flaring volumes imitating 1830s sleeves just before the arm slits, the straight waist and the pleated sides. And I added flowers inside the hood to nod to 1850s bonnets.

The name leads you back immediately to romantic and gothic literature.

Details

The main fabric is an iridescent aqua-vermillion taffeta, more than ten meters of it. It is light enough to move with the wind yet strong enough to withstand the friction of its own train. The flowers are made of silk organza, dyed, pleated, and shaped one by one from plain white fabric by yours truly. The vintage ombré ribbon in rayon, adds detail with its brocaded flowers.

This hand-sewn cape (only a couple of seams are machine sewn) is vast yet weightless. It folds easily but, once opened and steamed, spreads wider than a robe à la française or a mid-19th-century skirt. I stitched around nine meters of hem by hand, with needle and thimble. The cape is slightly longer in front than my previous design, the Eden Cape. I am 160 cm tall, and when wearing heels, the front touches the floor. The length can be shortened or adjusted as needed.

The hood can hold almost any wig or hairstyle. Two small loops allow you to secure it with pins or combs, even on a windy day. The inside features several ties to adjust the fit; after the first time, it slips on easily. The side closures also tie, allowing the piece to adapt to different sizes — perfect for photographers, stylists, or costume studios.

It works beautifully on its own, but layered over a gown with a hoop skirt or panniers it becomes pure drama.

Because I will use this very piece for a few portfolio photographs before shipping, it will not leave the studio immediately. Please allow a few weeks before dispatch.

Each of my creations is unique. I do not sell patterns or replicas, and I do not authorise copies of my designs.

For non-EU customers: customs duties may apply on arrival. A legal sales invoice will be attached to the package. The short delay before shipping may help space the payment over time.
