Description
Did you know that most of 18th century female clothing would not have existed without the kimono?
With this robe volante I wanted to give tribute to the connections between the two cultures, and this piece gave me the chance to dive further into the history, the symbolism and the cut of such garments. After growing up with the rendition of 18th century fashion in Versailles no Bara, it feels like the circle is now complete.
The choice of the heron, symbol of fidelity, as the fan I brought to Versailles, was once again a way to bring with me the man I love and who hates wearing “uncomfortable” costumes and 18th century heels. Herons are also one of the most common birds you can see in the countryside around Venice.
Materials
The main material is a silk blend taffeta, aqua shot red. An unusual combination that succeeds in giving the vibrant depth of venetian canals.
Requirements
You do need a proper pair of 18th century stays to wear this. Without those, you will not get the result you see in the pictures, even if you try very hard.
It needs to be pinned on and it does require some skill.
Measurements
It is rather adjustable in size, it is 144cm (56.5 inches) from the shoulder down. It can adjust to a few sizes more than mine at the shoulders, which are the only strict part of it.
Why am I selling it? I simply keep making garments, and the occasions I have to wear this are very few. It is pretty, with its padded hem and painted herons, and matching stomacher with tassels… it needs to get out.
