Description

This costume was born inspired by the tilled land in winter. Walking in the surrounding of my new home, I was struck by the cold and almost greyish brown of the clods of earth, and I decided to create a dress.

A bit of Demeter and a bit of Persephone, this dress encloses 8 meters of plushy cotton velvet, with a very dramatic skirt and train. It looks like it’s made from earth, with the bronze details at the top of the neckline and around the cuffs, looking like shiny seeds.

It is built over a steel boned cotton corseted foundation, which gives the beautiful shape, and little built-in hip pads ensure a dramatic waist proportion. The top fabric is worked to mimick the construction of medieval dresses: only one centre seam and two side ones. The fabric is stretchy, so the sleeves are extra comfortable.

The back is closed with hand sewn eyelets and spiral lacing, to add another nod to historical construction.

The bottom of the skirt is embellished with drops of gold paint, echoing the trimming.

There is a built.in golden brocaded panel at the front of the skirt, which I used to pin to the petticoat. It can be removed, and the skirt can be closed to the hem, or you can do as you please and assemble it to a different skirt, if desired.

The dress has been gently worn. The price reflects both that, and the construction as a personal piece.
