Detail study after the Portrait of Madame Grand

Water soluble oils on canvas board, 20x25cm or 7.8 inches x 9.8 inches

The photo I choosed to work from had a noticeably warmer colour balance than the original painting. This is not an attempt at a colour-accurate reproduction, but a study based on the particular version of the painting that I had in front of me. I was especially interested in the way the warm palette changes the whole feeling of the portrait, by enhancing the sub-surface scattering phenomenon of the skin, which I was interested in capturing and was not so visible in the original. This different toning sets accent on the ribbon and the lips, made interesting by the framing of this specific detail, and the specific brushwork of the rococo period.

These are all original, one-of-a-kind pieces, as usual. They are a lovely way to help me keep my art supplies box well fed.
