Study after François Boucher

Water-mixable oil on canvas board, 20 × 25 cm (7.9 × 9.8 in)

A small study after François Boucher’s portrait of Madame de Pompadour in her green dress, focusing on the figure of the woman behind the image: the official mistress of Louis XV, who managed to acquire an extraordinary degree of power and cultural influence in eighteenth-century France.

I was particularly interested in Boucher’s rococo brushwork and in the use of prussian blue, one of the important new pigments of the period. I love the way period-accurate colour can tell us something about the world in which a painting was made, as much as the subject itself does.

These are all original, one-of-a-kind pieces, as usual. They are a lovely way to help me keep my art supplies box well fed.
